PROJECT
Implementation of the General Medicine and Psychiatry Project in Department 37
Given the shortage of psychiatrists and significant regional disparities in access to care, general practitioners are often on the front lines of mental health management, without consistent access to timely specialist support.
The National Federation of Territorial Professional Health Communities supports the creation and operation of Territorial Professional Health Communities (CPTS). With support from the Erié Foundation, it is rolling out the “General Practice and Psychiatry 37” program to 32 CPTS across the country, following a successful pilot in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
The program enables general practitioners treating patients with mental health conditions to request remote consultations with a psychiatrist. Participating psychiatrists provide timely tele-expertise, committing to a 24-hour response time. This facilitates faster and more tailored care, even in regions with limited psychiatric services. Since its launch in 2021, the program has logged 750 consultation requests.
The project has two objectives: 1) to reduce regional disparities in access to mental health care and 2) to strengthen coordination among general practitioners, psychiatrists, and stakeholders in the social and medico-social sectors.
